Write Email
You read a description of a situation and write an 80-120 word email that covers the points given, within 9 minutes.
Format
- 2-3 items
- Email length 80-120 words
- 9 minutes to answer
- The prompt gives 2-3 points you must cover
Scoring criteria
- Content: whether you cover all the points given in the prompt
- Organization: whether the paragraphing and transitions are clear
- Vocabulary: whether word choice is appropriate
- Grammar: whether the grammar is correct
- Spelling: number of spelling / typing errors
Scoring dimensions are condensed and paraphrased from Pearson's official PTE Core scoring guide for readability; refer to the official documentation for the exact wording.
Answering technique
- 1Before writing, list out each point the prompt gives (usually as bullets); check them off one by one when you're done
- 2Use a standard business-email structure: greeting → state your purpose → cover each point in its own paragraph → polite closing → sign-off
- 3Match tone and salutation to the recipient (formal for support / a manager, more relaxed for a friend)
- 4Leave 1 minute to check spelling and grammar, especially homophones and subject-verb agreement
- 5Better to go slightly over 120 words than under 80 — being short costs marks directly
Common pitfalls
- Missing one of the prompt's points
- Fewer than 80 words
- Email missing a greeting or closing
- One block of text with no paragraphs
